I’m Exhausted
By Pieter Brown - WOW, what a weekend! If you love soccer then this was your weekend. Three days and four big games, it was fun but tiring.
We started out with an amazing Gold Cup double header. The Ultras were out in force, hangin’ with the Canadians. What an experience it was sitting with a bunch of Canadian supporters. There were as many hockey chants and phrases thrown out as there were soccer. Our friends north of the border have a great sense of humor about where they are in the soccer world.
FIU Stadium rocked with close to 18,000 screaming fans. This is what soccer in Miami is supposed to look and feel like. Fans of all nationalities were treated to two exciting games. How about those El Salvadoran fans, they were awesome.
Next came the last Miami Kickers FC home game of the season. The Kickers play in the WPSL, a very competitive developmental amateur women’s soccer league.
The Kickers tied Clearwater Galactics 2-2 at American Heritage HS. This was the Ultras first Kickers game and will not be the last. I was quite surprised by the quality of play for an amateur league. The Kickers controlled the game and could have easily beat Clearwater had they finished just some of their chances. The score would have been 2-1 Kickers if not for an unfortunate goalie error.
Miami Kickers will finish up the regular season schedule this weekend on the road. They will play last place FC Thomasville on Saturday and then on Sunday they will take on first place Florida Surge. These final games are vital for Miami to reclaim their top spot in the table as they push for the playoffs.
This great soccer weekend finished on a high note as Miami FC beat Vancouver 2-1 at FIU Stadium. The Blues have been playing much better as of late.
“We played better than Vancouver in every aspect of the game,” said head coach, Zinho. “The players are stepping up to the challenge, they are really coming together.”
Speaking of stepping up, I have to applaud Alen Marcina for starting to finally come alive. I have been a tough critic of Marcina’s, but Zinho stuck with him and now it is starting to pay off. Marcina scored the first goal early in the game and later got a red card for saying something to the referee. Whatever he said I’m sure was deserved as the USL refs are some of the worst in the game.
In the 23rd minute Inacio stepped up to the spot to put away a penalty kick due to a handball. Inacio now leads the Blues with four goals for the season.
Vancouver threw everything they had at Miami in the second half. In 88th minute Dever Orgill put away the Whitecaps lone goal.
Sunday was definitely not Miami FC’s largest crowd, but the Ultras made up for it by being as vocal as ever. Join us this Friday and Sunday as the Blues welcome in to Miami the Portland Timbers. These are two very big games that you need to be a part of. Help the Blues chop down the Timbers.
For more on these games, make sure to look for our new podcast that will be posted tonight. We will have more opinions and interviews on all the above.
